Navacelles to Cantobre

Distance: 50 km.      Difficulty: Challenging     Type: Paved. Mostly quiet roads.     Starting Point: Navacelles

Description: From the outstanding canyon of Navacelles to the cliff-top village of Cantobre, this route has its share of ups and downs, but riding through the wild hinterland of Upper Languedoc is an experience that won’t be soon forgotten. After the long, steep climb out of Cirque de Navacelles (sections 12%) you ride flat across the Causse de Blandas, then an easy climb to Col de Campviel. The descent to the D991 is lovely. Expect one short tunnel on the D999. The second substantial climb of the day is to Col de la Barriere. Nant and Cantobre on the Dourbie River should not be missed.
Directions:Take the D713 north out of the canyon, then turn right when you hit the D158. Ride through Blandas and continue northwest on the D158 all the way to national route D999. Left here towards Alzon, and continue on the same road till near Sauclières, where you turn right (north). You are still on the D999, which you stay on until the welcoming village of Nant. From Nant, head north again on the picturesque D991 until you see the D145 on your right. The dramatically perched village of Cantobre is a short climb from here.
